Obverse description In the Middle- The Umayyad Mosque (Arabic: الْجَامِع الْأُمَوِي‎), also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus (Arabic: جَامِع بَنِي أُمَيَّة الْكَبِير), located in the old city of Damascus, is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. The mosque is also important in Islam because of its historical and eschatological reports and events associated with the mosque. At right - Hafez al-Assa (6 October 1930 – 10 June 2000) was a Syrian politician who served as President of Syria from 1971 to 2000. He was also Prime Minister of Syria from 1970 to 1971, as well as regional secretary of the regional command of the Syrian regional branch of the Arab Socialist Ba`ath Party and secretary general of the National Command of the Ba`ath Party from 1970 to 2000.
